Sony has just released its financial results for the financial year 2022 and they show that PS5 sold 19.1 million units from April 2022 up until the end of May 2023.
Sony’s supplementary information shows that in Q1 of 2022, 2.4 million PS5s were sold. Q2 saw 3.3 million PS5s sold, Q3 saw an incredible 7.1 million units sold and Q4 it was 6.3 million. This makes for total PS5 sales in the 2022 financial year of 19.1 million.
In comparison, 11.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles were sold in the 2021 financial year.
Sales of First-Party Games are Up but Third-party Sales & DLC are Down
Other interesting information gleaned from Sony’s financial data shows that for the Financial year 2022 sales of first-party games increased. But sales of non-first-party games and add-on content )DLC) decreased.
God of War Ragnarok which was released in November 2022 no doubt helped increase Sony’s first-party game sales. But The Last of Us TV Show also played its part by helping to sell more copies of The Last of Us Part 1 on PS5 and The Last of Us Remastered on PS4.
In total, PlayStation first-party games sold a total of 43.5 million units in financial year 2022.
The data also shows that there was a significant increase in costs for game development. Let’s hope Sony doesn’t decide to increase the price of first-party games any more than they have done already.
Sony’s financial information also shows an increase in expenses incurred due to acquisitions. Early last year Sony bought Destiny 2 developer Bungie for a cool $3.6 Billion. Most recently Sony acquired Firewalk Studios which is working on a multiplayer first-person shooter for PlayStation.
PlayStation Plus Users Remain the Same as in 2021
Other information for Sony’s Games & Network Services division which encompasses PlayStation show that the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers has remained the same as the 2021 financial year.
For the 2022 financial year, Sony’s figures show that there were 47.4 million PlayStation Plus subscribers at the end of the fourth quarter. This si the same figure as at the end of the fourth quarter of 2021. This would seem to mean that the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers isn’t increasing or decreasing.
However, monthly active PSB users for 2022 did increase slightly across all quarters. By the end of the fourth quarter of 2022, there were 108 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network.
