Almost right after announcing this Thursday’s State of Play event, Sony has answered some vital questions on the compatibility of PS4 accessories with the PS5. Although a lot of peripherals and accessories should work with PS5, the DualShock 4 won’t work with PS5 games.
On a post over on the PlayStation Blog, Sony has outlined which accessories and peripherals will work (or should work) on their next-gen console. But, if you were hoping to use your DualShock 4 to play some PS5 exclusives, unfortunately, it won’t be possible.
Sony states that the DualShock 4 will not work with PS5 games BUT will work with supported PS4 games played on the PS5.
Will DualShock 4 work with PS5 games? – No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.
That’s the official line from Sony on why your PlayStation 4 won’t work with PS5 games.
I can see where Sony is coming from. Of course, they want PS5 exclusive game to take advantage of the DualSense’s additional features – like Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers. However, the DualSense is likely to cost a bit more than a DualShock 4, and it would have been nice if my PS4 controller would have at least worked with PS5 games. Minus the additional features obviously.
If the DualSense runs out of charge or becomes faulty, I would have liked the option to switch to the DualShock 4, instead of having to fork out for a spare DualSense right away.
The DualShock 4 will still work with compatible PS4 games though.
