Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, was announced at Tuesday’s State of Play. From the announcement trailer and the subsequent Blog Post by SUcker Punch, we learned a little bit about what Ghost of Yotei is about.

We learned that the game takes place in 1603 in an area of Japan surrounding Mount Yotei, a mountain with a snowy peak. The area in northern Japan is present-day Hokkaido. We also learned that the new hero of the game, the Ghost of Yotei is a female character called Atsu (played by Erika Ishii)

In a recent interview with the New York Times (requires login, so here’s an Archive link) Creative Directors from Sucker Punch Nate Fox and Jason Connell gave a tiny bit more info on the game. The directors said that Ghost of Yotei is a story of “underdog vengeance” that follows Atsu as she moves through the game’s landscapes of snowy tundras and sprawling grasslands.

During the NY Times interview the developers also said that players would have greater control over Atsu’s story. More than we did with Jin Sakai’s story in Ghost of Tsushima.

One other neat bit of info revealed by the game directors during the interview is that Ghost of Yotei will feature firearms. As well as Katana and other melee weapons.

“One challenge that comes with making an open-world game is the repetitive nature of doing the same thing over again,” said Connell, noting that players would be able to master firearms in addition to melee weapons like the katana. “We wanted to balance against that and find unique experiences.”

Ghost of Yotei is due to come to PS5 next year.
