The official name for PS VR2 was announced at CES 2022 by SIE CEO Jim Ryan. The official specs for Sony’s next-generation PS5 VR headset have also been announced. And it looks like a pretty good piece of VR gaming kit.
PlayStation VR2 will take gaming to a whole new level states the PlayStation Blog. The nextgen VR headset and Sense controllers will enable a much greater sense of presence and will allow players to escape into game worlds like never before.
“Players will feel a heightened range of sensations unlike any other – thanks to the creativity of the game worlds being built by our world-class developers, and the latest technology incorporated into the hardware.”
PlayStation VR2 Key Points
- High Visual Fidelity – PS VR2 will have higher visual fidelity, offering 4K HDR, 110-degrees field of view with foveated rendering using an OLED display with a resolution of 2000×2040 per eye and frame rates of 90/120Hz.
- Inside-out tracking – No more need for an external camera as the PS VR2 will have headset based controller tracking using integrated cameras on the headset. Hopefully, this will put an end to some of the dogy tracking issues that plagued PS VR.
- New sensory features – PS VR2 sense technology combines eye-tracking, headset feedback and the new Sense controllers to create an even deeper feeling of immersion in games. Essentially the headset will have vibration feedback that will let you feel a higher pulse rate, things whizzing past your head, etc. Might need to stock up on paracetamol though.
- Eye Tracking – the PlayStation VR2 headset will track your eye movements. So, looking in a specific direction will create an additional input for the game character.
