PlayStation is 30 years old this year. The original PlayStation console was released in Japan on December 3rd 1994. The console wasn’t released until a year later in the US and UK though, so we can still celebrate again next year.
To mark this momentous occasion, Sony is planning some cool stuff this holiday season. First up is a thing called My First GT. A homage to the first Gran Turismo game. This homage will include a trial of Gran Turismo 7 to get new players into the game. The release will also include cars, tracks and race events that will evoke nostalgia of the very first Gran Turismo game.
Also planned for the 30th-anniversary celebration will be the release of digital soundtracks from classic PlayStation games such as the original God of War, Twisted Metal, Star Hawk and Unit 13. Each month from October through to January, PlayStation will release a digital soundtrack from some of PlayStation’s fan-favourite franchises. You’ll be able to stream the following soundtracks on Spotify or buy them from other digital music stores:
- God of War
- God of War II
- God of War: Ghost of Sparta
- Twisted Metal
- Starhawk
- Unit 13
Shapes of Play
A PlayStation party wouldn’t be a PlayStation party without including the famous and universally recognised PlayStation shapes somewhere in the celebrations. And Sony is doing just that. Sony will be releasing a new line of products called “Shapes of Play.” These products have been specially crafted by the teams who designed the PlayStation consoles and will allow you to create fun moments with the iconic PlayStation shapes.
- Shapes of Play: Battle is a board game where you can challenge a friend to line up four different shapes of the same colour on the board to win.
- Shapes of Play: Create is a set of magnetic blocks that you can position in any direction to create fun shapes.
- Shapes of Play: Recharge lets you experience a new way to recharge between games, especially after that tough boss battle.
These Shapes of Play products sound pretty cool, let’s hope they are not overly expensive. Shapes of Play will launch exclusively through PlayStation DIrect in December.
As well as all the great stuff mentioned above, there will also be a free multiplayer weekend and Esports tournaments to participate in. Hopefully, they will also do something with PlayStation Stars so we can get some digital collectible to celebrate PlayStation 30th anniversary.
