Enable Naughty Dog has outlined what the latest The Last of Us Part 2 patch will contain, and it’s good news if you enjoy punishing yourself with ultra-difficult game modes.

The latest update to Naughty Dogs hit PS4 exclusive will see the return of Grounded difficulty and will introduce a permadeath mode.

The Last of Us Part 2 Grounded Difficulty

According to the Naughty Dog website, Grounded Difficulty in The Last of Us Part 2, represents the ultimate test of skill. This difficulty raises the stakes considerably, by making enemies deadlier. Ammo, upgrade and crafting materials are also made extremely scarce with Grounded difficulty.

With the latest update, Grounded will become a base difficulty option. So there’s no need to have beaten the game beforehand.

For the love of Christ, don’t die

If the Grounded difficulty didn’t sound insane enough, The latest patch, which is due out Thursday, will also add a Permadeath mode.

With Permadeath mode activated, if you die, it’s back to square one and you need to start the entire game over from the beginning. However, if trying to complete the entire game without dying is just a wee bit out of your comfort zone, you can opt to enable Permadeath mode on a per-chapter or per-act basis.

If you choose to put yourself through the pain and suffering of Grounded difficulty and Permadeath mode – and manage to survive – your efforts won’t go unrewarded.

There will be two new trophies added, one for beating the game on any Permadeath setting (You Can’t Stop This trophy) and one for beating it on Grounded difficulty (Dig Two Graves trophy).
