I’ve always loved movies like Honey I Shrunk the Kids or Inner Space where the main characters are tiny people in a big, big world. There’s something about the perspective of these types of movies and how normal things look somehow different when they appear to be massive.
Merge Games’ Smalland: Survive the Wilds is exactly that type of game. It’s a multiplayer, open-world survival game but you are a very tiny person having a big adventure in an oversized world. Puddles are the size of lakes, trees are like skyscrapers and cracks in the roads are like the Grand Canyon.
Smalland has been in early access on Steam for a while. But in a press release released yesterday publisher Maximum Entertainment, the parent company of developer and publisher Merge Games announced that the game will be leaving early access and will launch on consoles on December 7th.
Just some tiny folk living in a big, big world
In Smalland: Survive the Wilds you play as the Smallfolk, a tiny race of people who have to explore this massive world. There will also be a host of monstrous creatures to battle, like ants, cockroaches and beetles who all see you as lower on the food chain. Some of the creatures can be tamed though and you’ll soon be leaping huge distances on a Grasshopper, zooming around on a Damselfly or scurrying about on the back of a Spider.
There is also a base-building aspect to the game and you will need to scavenge for resources to build encampments. You can scavenge things like leaves, twigs or stones to help build your encampment and you can build them on the ground or high up the trees.
As you would expect from a multiplayer survival game, you’ll also need to craft armour sets and various other items to help you. You can collect powerful armour that gives you resistance and various other abilities. And you can mix them up to personalise your appearance. Gotta look your best as you ride your Grasshopper through town.
Smalland: Survive the Wilds certainly sounds like a really interesting game. But one of the best things about it is the multiplayer aspect. You can play alongside your friends with support for up to 10 players in multiplayer. You can explore together, fight together and survive together. Those who survive together, stay together.
Smalllands: Survive the Wilds release date
Smallands: Survive the Wilds comes to PS5 on December 7th. The game will arrive on PlayStation with new content and the developers have promised a roadmap for future updates. “The growth of Smalland has been anything but small, and the game continues to expand its feature set and acquire new players,” said Christina Seelye, CEO of Maximum Entertainment. “It’s been incredible to see the community’s response to the game, and we are thrilled to open up the massive world of Smalland to players across consoles.”
The game already has a PlayStation Store page so you can wishlist it now and get notified when it launches. The PS Store page also says that Smalland supports remote play, so you can try out your new PlayStation Portal with it if you’re getting one.
