Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida has discussed the future of PlayStation in a recent interview. The Sony boss says PlayStation’s future lies in gamers being able to play in different spaces and will expand PlayStation’s gaming experiences to PC, mobile and the cloud.
Sony CEO on the future of gaming
In a recent interview with Norge Bank Investment Management, Sony’s CEO Kenichiro Yoshida was asked about the future of gaming, Yoshida’s reply talks about a future where gaming will be everywhere. “In short it will be ubiquitous, wherever there is computing users will be able to play their favourite game seamlessly,” Yoshida said.
The Sony CEO followed up by stating that PlayStation and consoles will remain Sony’s core product but the company will expand it;s gaming ventures into PC, cloud and mobile. “Gamers will be able to find a place to play in different spaces. PlayStation will remain our core product we will expand our gaming experiences to PC, mobile and cloud.”
Sony CEO Looks Foward to Playing Spider-Man 2
When asked by the interviewer if he is a gamer Yoshida said that he doesn’t have much time to play games but he is looking forward to playing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. “The reality is a I don’t have much time to play games on a daily basis but I am personally looking forward to playing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.”
Gaming subscriptions are not as valuable as video streaming
Kenichiro Yoshida was also asked about his thoughts on game subscription platforms. The Sony CEO says that he doesn’t think they are as valuable as video streaming platforms (such as Netflix) because gamers usually play one game at a time. “People usually play one game at a time. So, the all-you-can-eat type of many games may not be so valuable compared with video streaming services. We have a kind of balanced or hybrid service on PlayStation Network, subscription as well as pay per content.”
On Microsoft and Activision
The Sony boss was also asked about the Microsft acquisition of Actibvion and how that will affect the gaming landscape for Sony. Yoshida responded by saying that it is important to provide gamers with different options to play and that Sony will continue its efforts to achieve this.
