In a press release on Wednesday PlayStaitoh platform holder Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that PS5 had sold over 50 million units to gamers.
That’s over 50 million PS5 consoles sold through to consumers in 3 years since the PS5 launched in November 2020. After its initial launch, PS5 was in high demand but gamers struggled to get their hands on the coveted console due to supply chain issues.
However, supply chain issues ended earlier this year and PS5 was back on store shelves. But considering the number of consoles sold they have also flown off store shelves pretty quickly too. PS5 supply issues are no longer a thing and you can get one anywhere now. Sony recently said that due to the availability of PS5, they expect a strong holiday season this year.
PS5 sales have also been helped by top-quality PlayStation first-party games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Horizon Forbidden West.
“Achieving this PS5 sales milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community and their passion for the incredible experiences created by the talented developers from PlayStation Studios and our partners,” said Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. “We’re grateful for all of our players who have joined the PS5 journey so far, and we’re thrilled that this is the first holiday season since launch that we have a full supply of PS5 consoles – so anyone who wants to get one can get one.”
The PS5 is quickly catching up with PS4 sales. Sony’s last generation console had sold just over 73 million in its first 3 years according to Statistica.
The PS5’s future is looking bright, Sony recently launched a refreshed PS5 slim model and there is a rumoured PS5 Pro on the way later next year. There are also more top-notch games to come next year like Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. As well as the likes of Marvel’s Wolverine which is a bit further out.
