The Last of Us Multiplayer Game Hasn’t Been Cancelled

Game director is “still working on that game”

It looks like Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us multiplayer game hasn’t been cancelled and is still in active development. The last we heard about The Last of Us online game was from a Kotaku article. In that article, sources close to the game told Kotaku that it hadn’t been cancelled but was “on ice.”

However, after the Kotaku article was published several leakers and other news outlets claimed that the online project had indeed been cancelled.

But now Vinit Agarwall, a game director on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us multiplayer game has posted on X to say that they re still working on the game.

The post, published earlier today was mainly talking about a Super Mario game. But the game director says at the end of the post “And so this tweet can live on in peace… yes, I’m still working on that game..”

Although Agarwal doesn’t mention The Last of Us online project specifically, it is fairly obvious that this is what he is referring to.

The Last of Us multiplayer was scaled back

In a Bloomberg report back in May, it was reported that Sony had slowed down development on the multiplayer game. It also said that the number of developers working on the project had been scaled back and most had been moved to other projects.

This was after Destiny 2 maker Bungie, which Sony acquired last year, evaluated the game and found that it wouldn’t keep players engaged for very long.

The Bloomberg article did state at the time that a small group of developers were still working on the game. And that it hadn’t been cancelled.

Shortly after the Bloomberg article was published, Naughty Dog posted a statement on Twitter saying that the game “needs more time.”

The post from The Last of Us multiplayer Game Director is certainly good news for fans. The game is still being worked on and isn’t cancelled after all. But which direction the game is now taking or when we will see any more from it still remains a mystery.
