New God of War Game Delayed to 2022, Will Also Be on PS4

No new God of War until next year but it will be playable on PS4

The New God of War Game from Santa Monica Studio, which was teased at last year’s PS5 Showcase has been delayed to 2022. In another revelation, Herman Hulst, PlayStation’s head of Worldwide Studios stated that the game will also be on PlayStation 4.

Santa Monica Studios’s upcoming God of War game, which is yet to be officially titled, was originally slated for release this year. PlayStation fans will remember the very exciting and cryptic teaser trailer for the game that appeared at the end of last year’s PS5 Showcase.

In the teaser, which you can watch below, the game had a release window of 2021.

But a recent tweet from Santa Monica Studio, the developer has decided to shift the release window to 2022.

The delay comes as a bit of a shock to fans who were hoping to get their hands on the latest God of War game later this year. In a recent Q&A session on the Official PlayStation Podcast, Head of PlayStation Studios Herman Hulst explained that the God of War delay is partly due to access to performance capture and talent.

And for both of those [God of War & Horizon Forbidden West], they’re frankly affected by access to performance capture and talent.

“And for God of War, the project started a little later. So we’ve made the decision to push that game out to next year, to ensure that Santa Monica Studio can deliver the amazing God of War game that we all want to play.” Hulst told the Official PlayStation Podcast.

The new God of War Game will also be on PS4

Also in the same Q&A session, Hulst also pretty much confirmed that the new God of War game will also be on PS4.

Hulst was asked by Sid Shuman, SIE Content Communications Director how the PS4 factors into the PlayStation Studios development vision. And if the last-gen console is still a focus for new game development at PlayStation Studios.

Hulst responded “It very much is. You can’t build a community of over 110 million PS4 owners and then just walk away from it, right? I think that’d be bad news for fans of PS4, and frankly not very good business.”

And if PS4 owners want to play that game, then they can.

“Hulst continued “Where it makes sense to develop a title for both PS4 and PS5 — for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 — we’ll continue looking at that. And if PS4 owners want to play that game, then they can. If they want to go on and play the PS5 version, that game will be there for them.”

The news that the next God of War game will also be on PS4, a console that is almost 10 years old, has split the community somewhat. PS5 owners who were expecting the game to be a PS5 exclusive are annoyed that the game may not fully utilize the power of the PS5 if it also has to run on the PS4. On the other hand, some fans are also not particularly bothered and are happy for Sony to release the game on both last and current-gen systems.

It certainly looks like Sony is going to continue to support PS4 for a while yet. Especially when it comes to their popular first-party franchises.
