Sony is likely to release a mid-generation refresh PS5 Pro this year an analyst has told news site CNBC. The analyst said that launching the PS5 Pro would boost interest in the PS5 after Sony cut its sales targets for the console.

It would also mean that Sony has some serious console power on the market, ready for the launch of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6.

In a recent earnings presentation, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said that PS5 suffered a decline in sales in the current quarter and that the company expected to miss its shipment targets of 25 million units. Totoki also stated that the PS5 was now in the “latter half” of the console life cycle.

The PlayStation 4, which launched in 2013 got a revised PS4 Pro in November 2016. Three years after it’s initial launch. We are now entering PS5’s fourth year, so it seems the right time to launch a Pro revision.

PS5 Pro launching this year

Serkan Toto, a Tokyo-based Games Consultant seems to think that Sony will launch the PS5 Pro in the second half of this year. The consultant told CNBC, “There seems to be a broad consensus in the game industry that Sony is indeed preparing a launch of a PS5 Pro in the second half of 2024.”

The consultant continued, “And Sony will want to make sure to have a great piece of hardware ready when GTA VI hits in 2025, a launch that will be a shot in the arm for the entire gaming industry.”

In December last year, specs allegedly leaked for the PS5 Pro. The specs show a beefed-up PS5 that will be a ray-tracing powerhouse.

Sony has yet to officially confirm the existence of the PS5 Pro but some gaming insiders think that dev kits for the mid-gen refresh console have already shipped out to developers. If Sony is planning on releasing the Pro this year, it shouldn;t be too long until we hear some official news.
